How quilt sizes are worked out

A bed quilt is the mattress size plus the drop, the part that hangs down. The quilt drops over both sides and the foot, but not the head, so the drop is added twice to the width and once to the length.

If you want the quilt to tuck under and over the pillows, add a pillow tuck of about 10 inches to the length. For a queen mattress of 60 × 80 inches with a 12 inch drop and a 10 inch tuck, the quilt is 60 + 24 = 84 inches wide and 80 + 12 + 10 = 102 inches long.

  • Width = mattress width + 2 × drop
  • Length = mattress length + drop + pillow tuck

Queen size quilt dimensions

A queen mattress is 60 × 80 inches. A queen size quilt with a 12 inch drop and a 10 inch pillow tuck is 84 × 102 inches, or 84 × 92 inches if it stops below the pillows. For a deep pillow-top mattress with a 15 inch drop, make it about 90 × 105 inches.

King size quilt dimensions

A standard king mattress is 76 × 80 inches, so a king size quilt is about 100 × 102 inches with a 12 inch drop and pillow tuck. A California king mattress is narrower and longer at 72 × 84 inches, which gives a quilt of about 96 × 106 inches.

Twin and full size quilt dimensions

A twin mattress is 38 × 75 inches, so a twin size quilt is about 62 × 97 inches; a twin XL dorm bed needs 62 × 102 inches. A full (double) mattress is 54 × 75 inches, giving a full size quilt of about 78 × 97 inches.

Baby, crib, lap and throw quilt sizes

Crib mattresses are sold as 28 × 52 inches (US rules require at least 27 1/4 × 51 5/8 inches), and a crib quilt with a small 4 inch drop is about 36 × 56 inches. A baby or newborn quilt size for a play mat or stroller blanket is usually 36 to 40 inches square.

Lap quilts and throw quilts are not tied to a bed, so sizes vary. A common lap quilt size is about 50 × 65 inches, enough to cover one person in a chair, and about 60 × 70 inches is a common throw size for a sofa.

Choosing the right drop

Measure from the top of the mattress to where you want the quilt to end. Just covering the mattress edge usually takes 10 to 12 inches on a standard mattress; deeper pillow-top mattresses need 14 to 16 inches. A quilt that reaches the floor needs the full height from mattress top to floor.

Quilts also shrink a little when they are quilted and washed, often a few percent depending on the batting and how densely you quilt. If the size matters, make the top slightly larger than the chart.

Once you know the finished size, work out how much backing to buy with the quilt backing calculator, then the binding with the quilt binding calculator.

A standard king mattress is 76 × 80 inches, so with a 12 inch drop and 10 inch pillow tuck the quilt is about 100 × 102 inches. A California king mattress is narrower and longer, giving about 96 × 106 inches.

What size is a twin quilt?

Not always. Shops and pattern designers use their own sizes, and many sell one size for full and queen. Measure your own bed and use the calculator if the fit matters.
